Getting a cat out of a tree

We have all seen cartoons where the firemen come and get a cat out of a tree, but that is extreme. There are ways that you can get a cat out of a tree by yourself.

a. Remember not to panic.  There’s a very good chance that your cat will find a way down on its own, if you leave it alone.  So unless the cat is hurt or has something wrapped around its neck, like a leash, give it some time to get down on its own. If the cat is injured, go to step d immediately.

b. If a few hours have gone by and the cat still isn’t down, try opening a can of food at the bottom of the tree. Call the cat’s name, and remember to call the cat calmly. If you sound upset it may panic the cat more.

c.  Put a wooden ladder against the trunk of the tree. . She may be too scared to try coming down the trunk.  Give the cat a quarter of an hour to come down the ladder.

d.  If all else fails, climb the ladder after putting on a coat and some heavy gloves to protect yourself. Before you go up the ladder, make certain that it is sturdy.

e.  To help avoid being bitten or scratched, grab your cat by the nape of its neck. This will also help to calm the cat.

f.  When you have tried everything and you still can’t get the cat down on your own, call the humane society or the local animal shelter.  An animal handler will be able to get your cat down safely and quickly.
