Setting Up the Perfect Litter Box

Many people pick a cat for their pet partially because they like the convenience of them being litter box trained. In turn, many people end up getting rid of their cats because they have problems with their cat not using the litter box they have provided. Nine times out of ten when your cat isn’t using their litter box for a non-medical reason the problem can be remedied by correcting simple problems that are displeasing your cat. Setting up a litter box involves careful consideration of every aspect to make sure your cat is happy with the outcome.

It is important that you have enough litter boxes in your home to accommodate the number of cats that you have. You should have one litter box per cat because it is not uncommon for cats to dislike using the same box as other cats. If you think about it who could blame them, people wouldn’t want to walk in other people’s pee and poo either!

The litter box should also be located in a convenient location that your cat has constant access to. The litter box should be in a quiet area that is not heavily trafficked. Many cats won’t go in a box if there are too many distractions.

Take notice of what litter your cat likes and stick with it. Additionally, make sure you keep your cat’s box clean. Scoop litter once a day and wash the box and replace the liner every week. If the box smells or it is dirty most cats will start going outside of the box.

Cats are creatures of habit, so once you figure out what works for your cat don’t switch it up. Keep the litter box in the place they like it, use the litter they prefer and keep the box clean and you probably won’t have any issues.
