There are few reasons why to change your attending veterinarian.  Each one of them can rank differently according to your own perceptions, what it is that you believe that is unforgivable, and what can be forgotten.

Consider changing veterinarians if something of what he or she is doing simply does not feel right.  For example, if you have been visiting that particular veterinarian for over 3 years and in a ailment that seems serious, instead of reassuring you, he or she takes out his or her school books, so you “can see that he/she is right”.

Of course, if the prescribed course of treatment for your cat’s ailment seems too steep financially or too draining emotionally for both your cat and yourself, seek an alternative opinion before committing to it.

This is the major reason why you should be always attentive to signs and symptoms of discomfort and rareness in your cat; otherwise you will have to abide to whatever your vet is telling you, you do not have the time to seek a second or even a third opinion.

If your attending vet suddenly excuses him or herself and leaves you “in the capable” hands of a veterinarian that has NEVER seen your cat, consider this a big, bright, noisy red flag.  There seems to be some sort of ethical problem on the behaviour of your veterinarian.

A good advice is to take your cat to two different veterinarians, and even three.  Of course, you will take the advice of one as if it were the Holy Truth; and the other two veterinarians will be your second opinion and the quality vote so that you will not loose time or risks having an unknown veterinarian issue an opinion on such an important matter such as the life of your cat.
