How to litter train a kitten

Even though a cat will usually show her kittens how to use a litter box, it’s always a good idea to refresh your new kitten’s memory.  Of course, if this is a newborn kitten that has been abandoned, or their mother has died, they will never have had the training.

a. Choose a litter pan that is right for your kitten. The sides should be tall enough to keep the litter in, but short enough so that she can jump in and out of it easily. Cats especially like it when they have privacy, so consider getting one with a lid.

b.  Put the litter pan someplace quiet and not too far from your cat’s food. This way they know where to go.

c.  You’ll want to use litter that is unscented to start out, in case your kitten is sensitive.  The clumping kind works well and it’s really easy to clean up.

d.  When you bring your kitten home, show her right away where the litter box is and she’ll prolly get in and acquaint herself with it. She may even use it right away. Leave your kitten’s wastes in there until  the next day so she can find it by scent.

e.  When you know that she knows where the litter pan is, clean out your kitten’s litterpan every day. Kittens like to be clean.
