There are many cats in shelters who need good homes. That leads many people to consider adoption when they want a new cat. When people head off to the shelter to get a new cat they often have a kitten in mind, but when they arrive they are often saddened by the dozens of senior cats relegated to life in a shelter simply because they are past their prime. The fact is, young or old, every cat in a shelter deserves a new home, but knowing which is right for you is important.

Young kittens are appealing to almost anyone who sees them. They are fuzzy, little and they have that adorable little meow that just melts us humans like butter. Kittens are a lot of work though, they must be litter trained, and housebroken. They don’t know the laws of the land yet and they get into a lot of trouble trying to figure things out. Kittens are best for people who have the time and patience to deal with their precocious personalities and to teach them the things they need to know to live alongside humans happily.

Senior cats are usually housebroken and they are more calm and relaxed in their habits. They may not be inclined to play with you, but they are also not as inclined to run rowdily and destructively about your home. They are perfect for someone who is looking for a subdued companion to share their home and heart with. They may have less tolerance for children and other pets though, so it is best to inquire about a particular senior cat’s likes and dislikes before proceeding with an adoption.

Regardless of which you choose, adopting a cat that needs a home is a wonderful thing. It will improve your life and give a cat in need a happy place to call home.
